Clerics, Taliban, IDPs and Swat

Well finally they have spoken... the conference of religious scholars has endorsed the military action backed by Govt against the Taliban. "The Ulema and Mashaikh of Ahle-Sunnat on Sunday unanimously called for decisive action against the militants, saying the agenda of the Taliban was benefiting the country’s enemies and was against the basics of Islam", news report.

This should have been done long time ago. When Red Mosque (Lal Masjid) goons were out 'purifying' the society, these scholars were backing them. When Taliban ruled the roost in Afghanistan, they cheered for them because they represented 'the society at the time of Prophet Muhammad'. Duh. One never came across an opposing argument from these clergy when Taliban went around spreading horror with their 'innocent wish' of 'asking for implementation of shariah'.

But its a good sign even if they did it 'because the tide was turning against Taliban'. They are a menace to the society so they have to be opposed by Pakistanis in unequivocal terms for their own good. Its not just Taliban per se, but the 'mentality' that goes with them which says that a certain belief has to be implemented on to the society with force. That one can do anything they like just because they are doing it for the cause of Islam. The scholars came up with the wording that implementation of shariah by force and taking up arms against state are totally wrong. This might not help now but at least holds good for the future where they have maintained a stance against Taliban and their ilk.

On the other hand, Military it seems is taking it seriously this time around. The operation is intense against the militants with their PR maintaining that '1000 taliban have been killed with quite a lot of foreign fighters'. Well, the truth will be out in the open sooner than later so we should take their statements as just what they are... statements.

A huge number of Internally Displaced People has been reported. Around 1.3 million are being housed in various camps around Peshawar, Mardan, Charsadda etc. Relief work is fast picking up pace with private organizations being more productive than Govt. This is the largest displacement of people in Pakistan's history and its a tale of misery and suffering. There is urgent need of food and shelter required for them. Not only this, the editorial of The News had this shocking revelation that Taliban people are prowling for boys and girls in camps to get them recruited for them as well as to use them as human shields and other (plainly sick) people are here to get hold of these children to use them in sex industry. How sick people can get?

Anyways, the IDPs want the Taliban out of their places and want Govt to 'sincerely' do it this time as they have left their homes for it. If the Govt and military have any idea of what is in store for Pakistan in the future then they will take care of IDPs, do well to win their 'hearts and minds' and definitely will have to route the Taliban phenomenon. Its Good bye otherwise.

Swat! Pray Peace!

Nothing can be better than this deal right now. I swear. People of Swat have had enough. The NWFP Government led by ANP signed a peace deal with Tanzeem e Nifaz e Shariat e Muhammadi TNSM. Chief Minister Hoti and elderly chief of TNSM - Maulan Sufi signed the peace accord. The deal basically states that 'shariah' will be implemented in Swat, especially Malakand where TNSM was asking for implementation of it since 1994.

A lot of hue and cry is being raised on this deal - from NATO and US to our Pakistani brethren who consider that the deal itself is defeat of the State against the militants. It is said that the deal will not work because militants don't consider it as of any value. Thats True. It is said that agreement is ultravires to the constitution as it calls for establishment of 'Darul Qadha' which would be final legal decision authority bypassing Supreme Court. Thats true. They say that militants wanted implementation of 'Shariah' - but whose shariah will it be? Sunni, shia, barelvi, deobandi, hanfi, shaafi etc etc? Thats true as well because Taliban consider all the rest as infidels. It is argued that there is no strategy mentioned as to how the militants will lay down their weapons. True I would say. It is said that the Sufi Mohammad will not be able to restrain his son-in-law, Maulvi Fazlullah or Maulana Radio (because of his illegal FM transmission in which he hurls threats to nay sayers). True too. It is said that it will give an excuse for every religious outfit to take up arms and demand implementation of Shariah. Can't argue against it.

Now tell me what could have been done otherwise to stop the mess that Swat was in? Do you have a solution? The political administration was routed by militants. Hospitals, schools, police chekposts blownup. Bridges destroyed. Courts and lawyers threatened. People being abducted, killed, slaughtered. Army was no where to help. Locals could not withstand the might of militants being well funded by every element imaginable against the security of State. what should one do to stop the downward spiral? This is what would have happened.

You should have seen the joy on Swatis. They were so jubillant that finally peace had a slim chance to survive. The Nizam e Adal system being planned is nothing new. It was running since 1996, amended in 1999. It had judges of local courts turned in to Qazi (Islamic judge). Implementatio of Shariah has long been demand of people of Swat and its an excuse for militants. Why not implement it? Let it function and see what happens. Let the pacifist in Sufi Muhammad deal with his son-in-law (He is hardly a pacifist becasue he believes in jihad all over the globe, in fact even went to Afghanistan with local boys to fight against the amercians but compared to fazlullah, his son-in-law, he is a tame goat)

So lets just be with Swatis for a moment ok? They lost their lives, livelihood and loved ones to the militancy. Lets pray for Swat to be the paradise it was once again. Pray peace.

Statue of Buddha

We are sick. really. Swat is in a turmoil. Government and local religious authorities are at odds with each other. And the result apart from killing of innocent people? Statue of Buddha.

Twice it has been the target. Some 'believers' I suppose are trying to knock it off from its place because it is a sign of idolworship. Just like the case of Buddha of Bamyan in Afghanistan. Why should an idol be present on the land of the faithful?

I say it again. We are sick. Really.

Unfortunate thing is that these people are our own people. They are part of the society. This mentality really exists. Medresshas (not all) do preach hatred. I am supposedly a 'sunni' because I was born in such family. I used to study Quran in mosque just like an average pakistani child. Trust me.. I used to hear some really nasty things about shias! and non-muslims... we were supposed to stay away from them too! but perhaps not as bad as shias! Good lord they were devils!

Anyways.. No one from the NWFP government (purely Islamic Government I believe because mullahs rule there) has come up with even a denunciation.. let alone providing some security. (yeah yeah I know I am not talking about security for humans but talking of providing security for a statue). The Islamic Caliphate of NWFP is perhaps busy saving its own seat. This ancient relic circa 2 B.C will be no more. I hope I am wrong.
